Ring of Bright Water: Otter Charm Tiger Eye and Quartz Bracelet

On a melancholy Thursday morning, I walked into a little gemstone and bead shop on Michigan Ave and went fishing through the glass case of animal charms on the front counter. I caught this little guy.

Tiger Eye is tied to Mercury, the planet associated with Gemini. It’s associated with focus, intuition and protection from the evil eye.

From: The Cycle of Power Animal Totems by Sayahda (and re-posted by Michelle O’Neil):

There are two kinds of Otter, the river and sea. Delightful creatures to watch in the wild otters have a strong curiosity exploring every nook and cranny they can find just to see what’s there. Their curiosity reminds us that everything is interesting if looked at from different angles. They know how to float on the currents of life enjoying the beauty that it holds. Their relaxed attitude reminds us to laugh with life and not take things too seriously. They offer us the gift of laughter, trust and playfulness.

What’s Your Sign also had some interesting things to say on Otter symbolism in Native American myths and legends:

A little quirky, and unorthodox, the Otter is a hard one to figure sometimes. Perceived as unconventional, the Otter methods aren’t the first ones chosen to get the job done. This is a big mistake on the part of others ā€“ because although unconventional, the Otter’s methods are usually quite effective. Yes, the Otter has unusual way of looking at things, but he/she is equipped with a brilliant imagination and intelligence, allowing him/her an edge over every one else. Often very perceptive and intuitive, the Otter makes a very good friend, and can be very attentive. In a nurturing environment the Otter is sensitive, sympathetic, courageous, and honest.

One tiger-eye otter charm
60 crystal quartz chip beads
4 amethyst chip beads
4 amazonite chip beads
4 smoky quartz chip beads
1 gold-plated magnetic clasp
1 aluminum jump ring
jewelry pliers

I chose crystal quartz for the base and amazonite, amethyst and smoky quartz to add a little color and make the otter’s natural beauty shine through. Amethyst aids intuition, provokes honesty and promotes a good sense of judgment. Amazonite promotes practicality and balances the emotions. Smoky quartz transmutes negative energies and promotes creativity in business matters. The crystal quartz are string in revolutions of 15, followed by two smoky quartz, two amethyst, two amazonite.

Instead of using beading wire and crimp beads, I opted to use a piece of plastic thread the beads I bought came on. After I strung the beads and the magnetic clasps, I tied a double-knot at each end and weaved the loose ends in through the beads. It’s holding up pretty well so far!

This bracelet has a light, cool touch when I put it on and it looks delicate and sweet hanging from my wrist. I’m very proud of it.

(P.S. anyone interested in researching more about otters, I highly recommend Gavin Maxwell’s brilliant book and the film based on it.)

  1. Very cute! I love it! Otters are adorable. I’ve got a friend who loves otters to bits. I’m going to send her this link!

    • Thanks so much! I love otters. When I first moved to Chicago, my sister and I took a trip to Shedd’s Aquarium. I must have watched the otter tank for at least an hour, watching them swim and play in the water. They’re almost balletic in some of their movements and they always look like they’re having fun šŸ™‚

      • I’ve never gotten to see otters in real life (never been to an aquarium), but I love watching them in Youtube videos.
