Favorite Videos: “Stephanie Says” by The Velvet Underground

I first heard this song in 2001, when I went to see The Royal Tenenbaums in the theater. The song accompanies the return of Mordecai — Richie Tenenbaum’s pet falcon — to his rooftop perch in the Tenenbaum homestead. Gone for more than a decade and returning the day after Richie’s suicide attempt, he has several new white feathers, marking his survival of the long journey and the wisdom he picked up along the way.

There’s a lot to learn in our survival of traumatic events: how we react, how we process, and what we choose to take with us when we move on. Lou Reed seemed to know this better than a lot of musicians of his age.

RIP, Lou Reed.
