Seasons Greetings, people

It’s that time of year again. Since my advent calendars of years past have been somewhat erratic (or, on “crafty-person’s time”, if you like), I decided to swap it out this year for a short series of holiday posts, sharing my favorite yuletide traditions (of which there are many, some quite esoteric).

First up, Black Books

The Graham Linehan/Dylan Moran series conceived of and produced as a “sister series” to Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes’ Spaced centers around Bernard Black, a cantankerous, wine-swilling bookshop owner constantly at odds with his more social assistant/flatmate, Manny, and their nerdy friend and fellow retailer, Fran. My ex bought the box set a couple of months before we moved to Chicago, but we didn’t start watching it until late November of 2009. Whenever I watch these 18 episodes back, it reminds me of late autumn/early winter spates of cold, peppermint mochas, and a sense of everything being completely new (and absurd) — which works quite well for Xmas/Yule/Saturnalia.
