Favorite Yuletide Videos: “Little Drummer Boy (Peace on Earth),” Bing Crosy and David Bowie

I have no idea whose idea it was to have David Bowie on Bing Crosby’s last Christmas special (and television appearance, aired two months after he died), but they certainly racked up a lot of good karma for themselves (and, hopefully, presents from Santa). Bowie has stated he accepted the invitation because his mother was a fan, but disliked “Little Drummer Boy,” so the echoing lyrics and new middle eight were written for him to sing instead.

This was another song that, for many years, we only had on a scratchy audio cassette, recorded from a VHS clip of the duet my father recorded from television. I’m pretty sure we only bought the “NOW That’s What I Call Christmas” compilation album because this was on it.
