Favorite Videos: “This Boy,” The Beatles

Eight years ago, I took a weekend trip to Edinburgh. I misjudged the distance between Waverley Station and the university and ended up walking a couple of miles to where I was staying. On the way, I passed a shop that had a Beatles handbag in the window. I popped in to buy it for my sister and ended up chatting with the owner who’d immigrated to Scotland from Pakistan in 1967. He’d never been to America and asked if the Beatles were “terribly popular” over here, even more than forty years after the Ed Sullivan Show. It was a lovely conversation.

Every conversation I have with someone about the Beatles is a lovely conversation.

Happy 50th, boys. Thank you for everything.
