Mini-Totoro Amigurumi

The more I make them, the more I fall in love with crocheted amigurumi plushies. Having spent most of the monstrous holiday season bouncing between kaiju movies, Buckaroo Banzai and Studio Ghibli, Totoro seemed like a logical next step.

The “mini” in mini-Totoro’s case means both small and minimalist. I quickly realized my size J hook and beginner’s crochet fingers only had so much combined aptitude for creating micro details of the big grey buddy — ears, tail, arms and claws quickly fell by the wayside, but I was able to create his white furry belly. And, if nothing else, this one piece plushie model would work well for cat toys and younger kids.

Since Godzilla’s mouth turned out well, I decided to use felt and embroidery floss to recreate Totoro’s eyes. Eyes always seem to be the detail that brings a character to life. There are many expressions that can be created with just a few key placements of needle and thread.

Another first effort complete! I’m going to have to tackle this guy again with a smaller hook so I can make some ears and a tail (and, maybe, an umbrella). What do you guys think?
