Tiny Red Dwarf Cross Stitch Necklace

Playing with the black Aida cloth sent me to bed with visions of spaceships dancing in my head. After the TARDIS, how did I ever have a choice but to give replicating Red Dwraf a shot?

Bottle cap
Plastic backing (Pringles lid)
3″ 16-count aida cloth circle (dyed black)
18″ ball chain with closure
Red cotton embroidery floss
Dark beaver grey embroidery floss
Silver metallic embroidery floss
Royal Court decoupage sealer/adhesive
7mm anodized aluminum jump ring
Wood craft stick
Metal hole-punch
Jewelry pliers
Sewing needle
Sewing scissors

Unlike the crystal clear shots of the Enterprise, there aren’t many good frames of the Dwarf to build a good cross stitch pattern. Honing it down to less than a dozen stitches produces a decent approximation, particularly on the black cloth with the silver one-strand stars.

Being a mining ship, the Dwarf has a large rock sticking out of its side, picked up from one of Jupiter’s moons for mining on the go. With the ship itself minimized, two stitches in the dark beaver grey were just enough.

With the minimal design, I ended up making three necklaces in the time it took me to complete one TARDIS — one for me and two of my friends at GenCon!
