“Very Metal” Metal-Stamped Ring

Much as I love my fiber crafts, sometimes it does a lot of good to hit things with hammers and break things with wire cutters. In honor of my months-long Britcom binge, I created a ring inspired by the back of Vyvyan Basterd’s denim jacket.

Bead Landing aluminum ring blank
1/16″ letter stamp set
Ring mandrel
Jewelry anvil
Rubber jewelry hammer
Sharpie pen
Multi-fiber cloth
Electrical tape

Gift wrapping has recently robbed our home of Scotch tape and when it came time to fix the blank to the anvil for stamping, I had to improvise with electrical tape. It ended up being a decent substitute and allowed me to  line up the letters evenly.

The sharpie pen is the amateur jewelry crafter’s secret weapon for creating patina on metal stamped letters (if and when it washes away, it’s easily replaced). Once the letters were filled in, I wiped the surface down with the micro-fiber cloth to remove the excess ink.

Aluminum is both lightweight and malleable. For shaping and sizing the ring, I didn’t have to do much more than wrap and press it around the mandrel with my thumb. Once the size was fixed, I finished shaping it around the mandrel with my jewelry hammer.

And now I have something new and fun to wear with my ugly holiday gear! What do you guys think?
